Abstract

Background: As people get older, the condition of
cardiorespiratory fitness will decrease.
Cardiorespiratory fitness is the ability of the heart,
lungs, and blood vessels to take oxygen and then
distribute it to the tissues during rest and exercise.
The cardiorespiratory fitness can be measured by
determining VO
max. Low impact physical exercise
such as gymnastics can help improve
cardiorespiratory fitness and reduce the risk of
cardiovascular disease in the elderly. Elderly
gymnastics is a mild exercise that is easy to do and
not burdensome if applied to the elderly. Objective:
This study was conducted to determine the effect of
elderly gymnastics on cardiorespiratory fitness in
the elderly. Method: This study used quasi
experimental method with pre-test and post-test of
one group design. The sample was 17 elderly with
non-probability sampling. The sample was divided
into 1 group i.e. the group given elderly gymnastic
practice done 3 times a week for 4 weeks. The
study used a Six Minutes Walking Test (SMWT)
measuring instrument that was converted into the
VO
2
2
max formula to measure the cardiorespiratory
fitness. The normality test was SaphiroWilk test.
Hypothesis test with paired sample t-test was used
to determine the improvement of cardiorespiratory
fitness in the treatment group. Result: Hypothesis
test result in treatment group with paired sample ttest

obtained p = 0,000, which means there is
influence of elderly gymnastics toward
improvement of cardiorespiratory fitness in the
elderly. Conclusion: There is an influence of
elderly gymnastics on improving cardiorespiratory
fitness in the elderly. Suggestion: Further research
is suggested using more samples, longer study
time, and different measuring instruments.
